Masakazu Murakami KUMOGAKURE ONSEN : Reclusive Travels
¥7,800
limited edition of 700 copies 104 pages, 91 black & white plates print on cloth ; hardcover text ; Japanese and English book design ; Katsuya Kato size ; 225mm x 270mm x 15mm roshin books 2015 ISBN 978-4-9907230-2-6 4,536 yen release date ; 1 June 2015 There was a time in my late 20's when I had a desire to disappear from the plane of worldly affairs. Kumogakure has no direct translation in English. It means to be hidden by clouds, shrouded, invisible. No longer able to endure my world and he affairs that surrounded it, I spent two years wandering blindly through fog-draped Hokkaido and Tohoku. The same volcanic activity that gave birth to Japan is the source of its hot springs, called onsen in Japanese. The onsen depicted in this book are but a minuscule fraction of the 3,000 hot springs that are said to exist across the archipelago. By chance I became fascinated with the natural steam clouds that rise from these curative, restorative onsen. Springs vary in Japan - there are naturally warmed hot springs, mineral springs, hidden springs, watering places, and small, ancient spa towns. No matter what the type, anywhere is fine so long as you have hot springs and name. The banal and the extraordinary meet at these springs, as do life and death. They heal both locals and travelers. These hot springs are suffused with nostalgia and afford the pleasure of unique visual experiences. These are the places I rambled through, taking photographs. As I traveled through these places, I dreamt of a transcendental self beyond my own identity. Flooded with memories of experiences I had never had, encompassed by all emotions, I felt a tremendous longing for a self from unknown times that was without gender or age, raised and nurtured in and among these unknown mountain settlements and seaside towns. The photos within this book were completed in 2003. More than a decade later they undeniably reflect what I saw on my travels. However, as time passes, they have gradually begun to feel to me as though they were taken by someone else, from a different world. Sorting through these photos in making this book, I realized that deep within me there is a dark flashpoint that has no place to go. I'll probably return to my reclusive travels among the hot springs. I hope that perhaps this book will become as ephemeral as smoke, seeming to disappear upon publication, only to be met again decades from now through chance and the joy of a reader. 1977, born in Tokyo Currently a photographer and editor

Hiroyasu Nakai / North Point
¥7,000
limited edition of 700 copies text and image selected by Daido Moriyama book design ; Satoshi Machiguchi editor ; Masakazu Murakami 96 pages, 72 black & white plates hardcover text; Japanaese and English size: 258mm × 174mm × 13mm ISBN 978-4-9907230-4-0 Shuji Terayama Museum is pleased to host a joint exhibition by photographers Daido Moriyama Hiroyasu Nakai from April 4 to September 25, 2016. After the sudden death of Nakai in February, 2016, Moriyama, a friend of Nakai's for over 40 years, carefully selected photographs from approximately 500 of Nakai's original prints. “North Point” is the result of this edit. Hiroyasu Nakai was born in Hachinohe City, Aomori in 1955. He participated in Eikoh Hosoe's WORKSHOP photo school in 1976. Upon graduation, he began a new chapter in his life as a photographer and became a member of CAMP, an artist-run photo group and gallery headed by Moriyama. After he left CAMP, he independently established a photo gallery Hokuten (North Point) in his hometown in 1988, and began exhibition his own work in a series of exhibitions. “North Point” features photos taken in Hachinoche City during Nakai's time there. Regarding Nakai's pictures Moriyama has said that they are “neither honest reporting nor his love for his hometown. The photographer Hiroyuki Nakai integrated himself into his environment with a deep understanding.” Nakai's perspectives of Hachinohe City are expressed in the publication of “North Point”, published by Roshin books with the assistance of Satoshi Machiguchi, a Japanese art director. “North Point” will surely be regarded as a historically important contribution to the world of photography. 60。 Hiroyasu Nakai 1955 Born in Hachinohe city, Aomori prefecture, Japan. 1976 Studied under Hosoe Eikoh at the Workshop Photography School. 柳沢 信 Shin Yanagisawa Untitled limited edition of 1000 copies 96 pages, 89 black & white plates hardcover , offset printing on cloth text ; Naomi Yanagimoto Japanese and English editor ; Michitaka Ota book design ; Katsuya Kato size ; 256mm x 256mm x 16.5mm roshin books 2017 ISBN 978-4-9907230-6-4 release date ; 15 March 2017 roshin booksでは7冊目の写真集として柳沢信(1936 - 2008)の写真集を出版いたします。 roshin books publish Shin Yanagisawa(1936~2008) "Untitled" as the 7th photo book. Yanagisawa's magnificent debut was "Untitled youth " in 1958. After that, he was recuperated for two years from 1961 because of illness, but he actively focused works on camera magazines again. After returning, Yanagisawa's eye was directed to various place in Japan. From the time of debut, He consistently kept saying "I do not need words in photograph". The subject, the emotions of the photographer, the world sharpened to the point where it is not necessary to explain them in words, it is just a photograph. Yanagisawa had only exhibition four times before life, he published only 3 photobooks. He grasped the world reflected in his eye at the pace of his own regardless of the trends of the surroundings and so on. There is also an episode in the early 70 's that refused the publication request of the photobook from Shoji Yamagishi who was called the Emperor at the then editing chief of the "Mainichi Camera" 27 years have passed since "Shin Yanagisawa / Photograph" published in 1990. Past photo books are already out of print, and now we do not have the opportunity to see them. Michitaka Ota(Sokyu-sha as known as publisher of Fukase's Raven) edited this edition. "Untitled" is definitely a historical one in this era.

And I reminisce / Jörgen Axelvall
¥5,500
And I reminisce limited edition of 700 copies 72 pages, 52 plates print on cloth ; hardcover with single gatefold text ; Jörgen Axelvall language ; Japanese and English book design ; Katsuya Kato size ; 270mm*225mm*15mm roshin books 2021 ISBN 978-4-909742-01-8 with booklet text by Paul McInnes, Yuki Harada release date ; August 2021 前作、”Go to become”から4年、roshin booksはJörgen Axelvall “ And I reminisce”を出版します。 As a young adult Jörgen Axelvall moved to New York City and soon made a curiously illuminating discovery about himself. The works in this book represent a visual testament to his discovery, explained and reflected upon in a short story penned by Axelvall. "And I reminisce" is Axelvall’s life-work and attempt to recapture time. It’s an intimate collection of photographs – portraits of friends, lovers and young men personifying Axelvall’s ‘visual memories’ from childhood through adolescence - paired with photographs of flowers. The flowers, captured in much the same style as Axelvall’s portraits, represent an equally crucial part of Axelvall’s early memories, as we soon learn from the introductory text. Setting out with his predilection for Polaroid and Instant Films, to connect with the traditions of casual, studio, and illicit photography, Axelvall pursues the immediacy and tactility to preserve the thrill of each fresh encounter. The photographs are meticulously scanned for subsequent treatment. With the regularly occurring flaws and imperfections of Instant Film as well as Axelvall’s preference for photographing in low, natural light – always handheld and with slow shutter speeds - the resulting photographs have a painterly quality. Axelvall is not simply taking portraits or depicting memories though. In his own words: “Taking pictures of people I feel affection for is a way of getting to know them better, to get a deeper understanding, to love more. The camera allows me to converse without words, to gaze into somebody’s mind and soul. I watch, study and try to capture the beauty I see.” 「And I reminisce」might be an exploration of Axelvall’s past but it is not a search for an idyllic past that inaccurately occurred; Axelvall is seeking clues and junctions that would have altered his present if acknowledged or acted upon earlier. Included with the book is a pamphlet titled 「ruminations」 comprising two short essays by Paul McInnes and Yuki Harada, both accomplished writers. Through these texts we get further insight into Axelvall’s work method and personality. Susan Sontag, the great American polymath and photography critic, wrote, “To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt.”

Jörgen Axelvall / Go to become
¥5,500
Jörgen Axelvall Go to become limited edition of 600 copies 50 pages, French binding 22 black & white plates,8 color plates hardcover , silk-screen printing on cloth poetry : Mutsuo Takahashi Japanese and English book design ; Katsuya Kato size ; 228mm x 274mm x 12mm roshin books 2017 ISBN 978-4-9907230-7-1 release date ; 15 March The New Exposure Photography CompetitionのInternational部門を受賞しています。 http://jorgenaxelvall.com/ In 2011 Jörgen Axelvall moved to Tokyo after living in NYC for 15 years. The work in Go To Become is Axelvall’s expression of his feelings as a newcomer to Japan. It is in every aspect biographical. The oxymoronic combination of feeling excluded and lonely on the crowded streets of Tokyo led Axelvall to seek out desolate and quiet environments. These places soon became his personal sanctuaries where he would find refuge and peace of mind from the hustle of the city, often in the middle of night. Several of these photographs earned Axelvall the New Exposure Award from US Vogue and Bottega Veneta in 2013. When asked by the jury for a brief description Axelvall said the following: I live in a big city the biggest in the world by some measure I’m a foreigner here at times I feel trapped, alienated and lonely amongst the millions of people calling this home These images were all photographed in central Tokyo not far from my home in Shibuya at the sanctuaries where I find peace A lover of poetry and literature, Axelvall later teamed up with Mutsuo Takahashi, one of the most prominent and prolific poets in contemporary Japan. With more than 130 books published, including dozens of poetry collections, Takahashi’s poetry successfully spans all the major Japanese poetic forms. After listening to Axelvall’s story and looking at the photographs, Takahashi wrote the poem “Go To Become” [in Japanese なりに行く] specially for this project.
